In order to properly plan and design a landscape, you need some vision. You have to be able to see ahead a little. Being a professional, I also have to take into consideration the maturity of the landscape. I need to be aware of any damage or inconvenience that may occur from improperly placed trees. There's more to it than meets the eye.

Designing and landscaping is more than just being creative and coming up with spectacular designs. You must be able to get an overall feel and be able to envision every aspect of the landscape, even after it matures. Your vision has to allow for the small tiny plants to be seen as full grown, and consideration given to the space they'll need.

Trees are beautiful to look at, but they serve many other purposes that a lot of people don't think about right off. Of course most people do think about the shade and boundaries, but many don't consider the wind blockage or noise breaks they provide. These should be key focal points in making an assessment. Not thinking ahead can be a costly mistake.

Here are some things to consider - Firstly, around the kids playing areas, make sure they'll have shade, especially during the hottest time of day. A canopy can be placed in this area, while also taking into consideration the 'bird factor'. We all know what a mess the birds can make in any area. The key here is to put some shade trees in the sun's line of fire. By knowing how big your trees will get, you can make a nice shade canopy and keep the kids in a sanitary environment.

Now about pool areas - Anyone who's ever had a pool knows the upkeep is never-ending. It's aggravating to have a tree close enough to drop debris into it. At the same time, you don't want to leave the pool totally without shade. In this situation, evergreens are the best, but place them where they will shade one side of the pool at a time throughout the day, and not the entire pool area.

Watering - It's best to water less times deeply than to water many times with shallow sprinklings. This will keep the tree roots down where they belong, to a point. There are still going to be some that will seek out moisture above and can wreak havoc on your concrete areas or other structures. They can break foundations, and can cost you plenty, so proper planning is crucial.

Other things to consider are things like power lines, property lines and easements (real neighbor busters), and underground utilities. Be mindful of sewers, septic tanks, pipes and any kind of lines that exist. It's no fun having to move a tree to fix leaks.

By knowing what's there, and being knowledgeable about what plants and trees you plant, you can avoid potential catastrophes. But not planning well can cost you plenty in the long run. Many people don't realize all the considerations that go into a good landscaping design. It's much more than just the beauty, it's foreknowledge of things to come, and taking the steps to avoid them, and being able to enjoy your home without worrying about any mishaps.
