Many of us have enjoyed the classic fairy tale, The Princess and the Pea, as children. But we might gain even more insight and enjoyment from this tale by taking an uncommon look at what could be some important, yet overlooked, implications of the story....

Let's have some fun and "stretch" this story out a bit...beyond the usual rendition. The now famous pea that tormented the princess throughout the night could also symbolize "a negative thought." And doesn't it stand to reason that a sensitive, innocent princess, who represents the purest of the pure in heart, would be turned black and blue inwardly by such a hard, painful item located deep inside the bed made up for her? (The bed, for our purposes, would mean the life, the conditioning inherited from parents, society, education, etc.) In this case, it was certainly no "bed of roses."

And remember, no matter how many "mattresses," representing "plans, goals, distractions, or ambitions," were thrown on top of that original disturbance, there was no relief to be found for the poor lady.... and so she suffered accordingly. In fact, the misery didn't stop until the pea was finally found and removed.

In the same way, we suffer from hidden confusion and frustration that we often try to appease through the "next relationship," "more money," "a makeover" - a steady stream of desires designed to get us to "the good life." However, some of us may have noticed that, despite at least some success, nearly identical frustrations soon surface just as our various achievements begin to show up. And don't the sometimes ambitious, complicated plots we devise seem to invite a lot more suffering as well? The "pea" is yet to be found....But where do we look for it?

To get at "the pea at the bottom of our bed" takes a special kind of investigation. An investigation that will first delve into what we think is causing our distress followed by a ruthlessly honest examination of whether or not our stories of suffering are genuinely, authentically, beyond doubt, real.... The results of this kind of examination are very often remarkable! This type of inquiry is also known as - The Work of Byron Katie....

In order to properly plan and design a landscape, you need some vision. You have to be able to see ahead a little. Being a professional, I also have to take into consideration the maturity of the landscape. I need to be aware of any damage or inconvenience that may occur from improperly placed trees. There's more to it than meets the eye.

Designing and landscaping is more than just being creative and coming up with spectacular designs. You must be able to get an overall feel and be able to envision every aspect of the landscape, even after it matures. Your vision has to allow for the small tiny plants to be seen as full grown, and consideration given to the space they'll need.

Trees are beautiful to look at, but they serve many other purposes that a lot of people don't think about right off. Of course most people do think about the shade and boundaries, but many don't consider the wind blockage or noise breaks they provide. These should be key focal points in making an assessment. Not thinking ahead can be a costly mistake.

Here are some things to consider - Firstly, around the kids playing areas, make sure they'll have shade, especially during the hottest time of day. A canopy can be placed in this area, while also taking into consideration the 'bird factor'. We all know what a mess the birds can make in any area. The key here is to put some shade trees in the sun's line of fire. By knowing how big your trees will get, you can make a nice shade canopy and keep the kids in a sanitary environment.

Now about pool areas - Anyone who's ever had a pool knows the upkeep is never-ending. It's aggravating to have a tree close enough to drop debris into it. At the same time, you don't want to leave the pool totally without shade. In this situation, evergreens are the best, but place them where they will shade one side of the pool at a time throughout the day, and not the entire pool area.

Watering - It's best to water less times deeply than to water many times with shallow sprinklings. This will keep the tree roots down where they belong, to a point. There are still going to be some that will seek out moisture above and can wreak havoc on your concrete areas or other structures. They can break foundations, and can cost you plenty, so proper planning is crucial.

Other things to consider are things like power lines, property lines and easements (real neighbor busters), and underground utilities. Be mindful of sewers, septic tanks, pipes and any kind of lines that exist. It's no fun having to move a tree to fix leaks.

By knowing what's there, and being knowledgeable about what plants and trees you plant, you can avoid potential catastrophes. But not planning well can cost you plenty in the long run. Many people don't realize all the considerations that go into a good landscaping design. It's much more than just the beauty, it's foreknowledge of things to come, and taking the steps to avoid them, and being able to enjoy your home without worrying about any mishaps.

The list of actions below should be used to start your checklist, which includes items that should be prepared and checked off before a disaster strikes. Improve home safety and promote emergency preparedness by following this guide.

Smoke Alarm Installation

\"improve Home\"

Smoke alarms should be installed on each level of your home, especially near bedrooms. You should always follow local codes and the manufacturer's instructions about installation and safety requirements. Smoke alarms are your first line of fire defense, so be sure to test them every six months.

Verify Insurance Coverage

It is important to have adequate insurance coverage whether you are a homeowner or renter. Flood damage and other hazards are not necessarily included, so be sure to get detailed information on your coverage.

Home Inventory

In case of loss or damage, a useful technique to assure your financial stability is to make a record of your possessions to help you claim reimbursement. You will most likely find it easier to support your claim if you keep photographs or videos of the interior and exterior of your home as well as other valuables. To protect these documents or and other vital family records, store them in a safe deposit box or other safe location. Some important documents would include birth and marriage certificates, social security cards, passports, wills, deeds, and financial, insurance.

Understanding Utilities

There are some disasters that require that you know how to turn off utilities such as water, gas, and electricity at the main switches or valves. Make sure you practice this with your family in case you are not home when a disaster strikes. It's also advisable to keep any needed tools near gas and water shut off valves.

As important as it is to practice shut off procedures, do not actually turn off the gas valves for practice purposes because they can only be turned on by a qualified professional. You should only turn off the utilities if you suspect the lines are damaged, or if local officials instruct you to do so.

Preventative Repairs

Whether you own or rent, your home should be kept well maintained and in good condition. If you have any structural defects such as cracks in ceilings, walls, and foundations, get them repaired. It's advisable to fix worn electrical wiring and leaky gas connections promptly.
