Many of us have enjoyed the classic fairy tale, The Princess and the Pea, as children. But we might gain even more insight and enjoyment from this tale by taking an uncommon look at what could be some important, yet overlooked, implications of the story....

Let's have some fun and "stretch" this story out a bit...beyond the usual rendition. The now famous pea that tormented the princess throughout the night could also symbolize "a negative thought." And doesn't it stand to reason that a sensitive, innocent princess, who represents the purest of the pure in heart, would be turned black and blue inwardly by such a hard, painful item located deep inside the bed made up for her? (The bed, for our purposes, would mean the life, the conditioning inherited from parents, society, education, etc.) In this case, it was certainly no "bed of roses."

And remember, no matter how many "mattresses," representing "plans, goals, distractions, or ambitions," were thrown on top of that original disturbance, there was no relief to be found for the poor lady.... and so she suffered accordingly. In fact, the misery didn't stop until the pea was finally found and removed.

In the same way, we suffer from hidden confusion and frustration that we often try to appease through the "next relationship," "more money," "a makeover" - a steady stream of desires designed to get us to "the good life." However, some of us may have noticed that, despite at least some success, nearly identical frustrations soon surface just as our various achievements begin to show up. And don't the sometimes ambitious, complicated plots we devise seem to invite a lot more suffering as well? The "pea" is yet to be found....But where do we look for it?

To get at "the pea at the bottom of our bed" takes a special kind of investigation. An investigation that will first delve into what we think is causing our distress followed by a ruthlessly honest examination of whether or not our stories of suffering are genuinely, authentically, beyond doubt, real.... The results of this kind of examination are very often remarkable! This type of inquiry is also known as - The Work of Byron Katie....
